Tiny footprint, great performance
5 out of 5 stars
Tiny footprint, great performance
Running i7 3770S, 16gb Ram, intel 240gb SSD.I have it running on a 1u rack shelf in a fairly confined 6u Gator case and getting very good temps (80-83C) while running prime95 burn-in test. Very happy with performance.Pros: Size, Cooling, ports (2 rs232 ports, hdmi&DVI, 4 USB 2.0, 2 USB 3.0), very little fan noise, packaging was very nice, drivers worked great with win7, nice clean installation.Cons: tight confines, ram installation a bit of a challenge, I swapped out one of the RS232 ports for another USB port (there's 2 open headers) and it was a bit of a challenge routing the cable to clear everything, and get case closed.

For its size, it's really packed with a lot of functionality. Its small, quiet and unobtrusive. It can be the perfect PC for many roles such as HTPC, Server, SFF PC, and Kiosk PC. Due to its small size, it can only support CPUs with a TDP of 65W or less. It has 2 SODIMM slots and can support 16GB of Ram. It has 2xSata II and 1xmstata ports. It has 2xGigabit NICs that can be teamed. It can support 1x2.5" device. The quality of case and build is enterprise grade. The case well thought out and easy to assemble.

I've installed an I3-3225 CPU, 16GB of ram and a 250GB SSD. It is dual booting to Win7 and Server 2008R2. It has run flawlessly for over 6months. It is super stable while running cool and quiet. I use it for Citrix Xendesktop and Windows Server testing. I'm so impressed with this little PC that I also purchased the newer DS81 with I7-4790S CPU, 16GB Ram, and 250GB SSD.

My only gripe is that this PC only supports 16GB Ram. If it could support 4xSodimms (32GB), it would make the ideal little server with an I7 CPU.

Managed to get it up and running within 1.5 hours. The OS however took a whole evening (Win 7) because I couldn't get the DVD ROM to work (I tried using one of the USB 3.0 ports on the back). Even after I managed to get the OS running, by painfully installing it through a flash drive, which I had to create myself, the computer couldn't recognize anything plugged in the USB 3.0 ports. What's the point of having such a hi-tech feature if you don't have the drivers for it? I should have gone with one of the other alternatives that featured only USB 2.0 ports. At least those work without any special drivers.

EDIT: As the users of this device are quick to help out with the drivers issue and the company clever enough to post the drivers on the device's site, I have to admit that the device is not that bad afterall. Still, they ought to improve the documentation and augment the contents of the CD. Also, as I use it and think about how much better it is for a laptop or a desktop, I tend to think it's actually not so bad. Its two mini fans provide sufficient ventilation and make very little noise. Basically, it's as silent as a hi-tech netbook. I'd recommend this device to any power user who wants something powerful yet portable.

Using this to run a small ESX system. I have an Intel Core i5-3470S and 8 GBS ram in this. Good performance for my purposes. This unit is a little bit bigger than my router! It runs cool, but its not silent. It doesn't bother me, but if you are using this in a home entertainment center, just be aware.

It was SO simple to get my components installed. Opening the case took two screws, and in about 10 mins I had installed processor, memory, SSD drive, the unit reassembled, and booted. It POSTed successfully on first try. If this is your first machine building, might be a bit of a challenge since everything is so small, but worked for me.

I can think of countless uses of this little box. It is intended for digital signage, but as a mini server, a second PC, router, etc. You are stuck with onboard graphics, so make sure you select a processor with a decent graphic performance onboard. It even comes with VESA mounting capabilities, so you could mount the unit behind your monitor or TV.

I had considered the Intel NUC but I was able to put together a higher performing system for less money, and this actually came with the power cord.

    ****Updated 11/16/13*****

Since I mentioned I am using this on ESXi, just a warning to people using it for a similar use. In both ESXi 5.1 and 5.5 I have struggled to get the PCI passthrough USB3 controller working. I am pretty sure its just an issue with this usb3 controller being unsupported. I have only tried with linux VMs so before I am sure, I will try windows. This is not a short coming necessarily of the hardware on the board, just more of a note for people trying to do the same. I know its crazy but I was trying to passthrough a usb3 Ethernet adapter to add more than 2 NICs to this little guy. I have it working with usb2 but not 3 and obviously USB2 is not truly fast enough for gigabit Ethernet. Another warning is the network interfaces are not supported out of the box for esx 5.5 but they are for 5.1.

This unit arrived defective and I just tried to RMA it and it's past the return deadline. Guess I'll rip it apart now that I can't send it back.

DEAD AFTER ONE YEAR. Bought this to replace my existing 3 year old XBMC/KODI media machine. For the brief period it was alive, it was the perfect media box. Fast, small, quiet and easy on my electric bill. I came out one morning and its was completely dead. No idea why.Tested the power supply (external brick) and it was fine. It just won't power up any more. What a disappointment, Needless to say, I won't be purchasing another Shuttle again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Little box!
Reviewed in Canada on August 20, 2013
I got this box to build an HTPC machine. I installed a 320GB that I had from an old laptop, also I installed 4GB SODIMM memory that I had and I got an I3 processor (from an older PC). I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits and XBMC. This box just works! I can play 1080p (residing on my NAS) with no problems. Also I use it for my Netflix and plays everything that I throw at it.
I noticed a little bit of heat coming from the bottom but not from the sides or the top. So far is not a concern, but if you attach it to the TV using the Vesa that comes with it, it could be problematic (I have not done it). I just like how it looks beside my TV.
I am planning on getting another one of this boxes for my basement TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Klein, solide und schnell!
Reviewed in Germany on January 7, 2014

Gesamtkosten rund 650 EUR ohne Betriebssystem.
