I've been told that you've been bold with Harry, Mark, and John. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday through Thursday with Harry, Mark, and John.
It's a busy schedule, but someone's gotta do it. If you're up for the job, just substitute the names of dudes from a great Lou Reed song with the names of sandwiches from the Satellite Cafe. It's easy to remember because they both have the word "satellite" in their names.
Instead of Harry, try the salami sandwich that comes with Dijon and cheddar on a jalapeno cheddar French roll. How about some hot goat cheese action with red peppers for the herbivores instead of a Mark? And in place of John, in spite of the many nice Johns that I know (that came out wrong), treat yourself to the illustrious 50/50. It's called that because the sandwich is half turkey, half ham, and 100% full of crisp veggies between the aforementioned jalapeno bread. All that bread is baked fresh daily, my friends, and that's seven days a week, not just Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday through Thursday.
If the sandwiches sound familiar to you, it's because they used to reside around Belmont and 60th at the now defunct Parkside Deli. We mourned the deli's demise in my household. Shades were drawn. Tears were shed. "Pale Blue Eyes" played on a constant loop for weeks. So I'm really pleased that the 50/50 and all its carb-happy colleagues have found a new storefront on Hawthorne and 20th. It's a better location, anyway, with more foot and vehicle traffic and few coffee and sammy places within walking distance. Now we're all happiness and light and jalapeno cheese rolls and "Bum bum bum, satellite of love." Lou Reed would be so proud or chagrined.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Robert M.Portland, OR022Feb 21, 2010First to Review
Regrettably friends, I am lazy.
L-A-Z-Y.
So lazy, in fact, that I'm asking my six year old niece to type up this review for me (so the typos are all HER fault).
It's also the main reason I'm thrilled by Satellite's recent opening. I live a few blocks away, and, believe me, it's really hard to travel even that far in the morning when you're suffering the ole caffeine-deprivation shakey-shakes.
Satellite brings in their beans from Seattle, and brews a lovely, strong espresso, one easily capable of restoring my musculo-skeletal coordination.
And even better, they offer breakfast sandwiches at very reasonable prices-- I paid $3.50 for an egg, tomato, cheese, avacado concoction that totally hit the spot (For a town so breakfast-obsessed, I've always been amazed that there aren't more places that offer these kind of prices).
Let's see, what else?
- The front windows get a ton of early afternoon light; great for reading, not so great for computing.
- They have wi-fi and it's been pretty fast when I've used it.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Amber C.Portland, OR569868Aug 21, 2010
It has good coffee, a nice environment, and great beer. There's also fruit juices in cans. They're delicious.
And there are things to eat, too. There are burritos. They are not to write home about, but they are fulfilling.
That is probably all you need to know about this place.
Oh yes, friendly baristas. There's a movie theatre nearby, and an awesome Vintage store across the street. There's Internet. There's a couch. There are people. It's good.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jennifer N.Portland, OR317Apr 20, 2010
The veggie sandwich is the BEST! The onion roll it comes on is amazing. All the ingredients are super fresh and delicious. Plus they have great micro brews on draft for $3 a pint. Screamin' deal!
Really great sandwiches in a great environment. I couldn't ask for anything more in my neighborhood sandwich cafe.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Stephen L.Portland, OR2618Jun 15, 2010
As construction on the new building on the corner of SE Hawthorne and 21st was underway, we hoped there would be some kind of restaurant coming in. Fortunately, Satellite arrived and didn't disappoint.
Their sandwiches are pretty good, but the thing that keeps me coming back are the lattes and cappuccinos. The people who work there pull a great, mellow shot of espresso which makes the afternoon (or even morning) that much more enjoyable. It's a little bit dangerous that they're located right around the corner from our office. Plus, it's saved me from having to walk down to Tiny's.
The staff is really friendly and neighborly, which always makes you feel welcome. We'll continue to visit Satellite whenever the need for a sandwich and/or caffeinated beverage presents itself.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aaron P.Portland, OR6717Aug 21, 2010
They make a good latte, and they have a great breakfast burrito. The coffee drinks are a bit more expensive than other nearby coffee shops, but they are definitely delicious!
They have tables, window seats, and a comfy couch you can sit at and use the wifi.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nick M.Portland, OR30269Dec 7, 2011
I saw hipsters conversing over their coffee, displaying their fabulous tattoos and indie cred. The 'warehouse' vibe was refreshing, I hadn't seen that before - sort of like the whole place had a sort of hip industrial feel to it.
The food was ok, as was the coffee.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Donal B.Portland, OR06Mar 12, 2010
Best freaking sandwiches in Portland. Add the fact that they have beer and coffee only makes the cafe that much better.

Beautiful furnishings and a great layout. I live two blocks away and stopped in tonight. Local microbrews and wifi make this place a keeper! Friendly staff, too.
